Not all businesses are created equal… well duh, everyone knows that, right? Wrong. How can you tell the difference between a good business, one that scales and allows you to get more time and freedom, as it grows, not the other way around? In this article, we will address that and discuss how you can choose the right business to pursue.

What is a Scalable Business?

To start with, consider what one of the most famous consultants ever, said. Jay Abraham, who is worth 21.7 Billion dollars, said, the three ways to make money inside a business are:

Get more customers

Do repeat business with those same customers

Sell higher-ticket products to increase revenue

When evaluating a business model, it would be prudent to apply the above test, to determine if the business will scale and be worth pursuing.

For example, you may want to pursue flipping houses. If so, then I would urge you to apply the above test. Is it easy to get more customers? Yes. Can you do repeat business with those same customers? No. Can you sell higher ticket products to increase the revenue? Yes. Therefore, since the second test failed, the business will not scale. So, if you want to have a business that scales, you have to find one that meets all three criteria. Let’s take at some that do.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is placing yourself between a buyer and a seller and receiving a commission for that service. We will cover this form of business more in later articles, but lets run the Jay Abraham test:

Can we get more customers? Yes

Can we do repeat business with the same customers? Yes

Can we sell higher-ticket items for greater revenue? Yes

Digital Products

Digital products are when we develop training or ebooks or other digital assets and sell them to others, perhaps even other affiliates. Lets apply the Jay Abraham test again:

Can we get more customers? Yes

Can we do repeat business with the same customers? Yes

Can we sell higher-ticket items for greater revenue? Yes

Events and Masterminds

Events and Masterminds are when we hold sessions, even virtually with webinars or physically with experts, called masterminds to share information with others. We can charge for those events and yes, you guessed it, it passes the Jay Abraham test.

Can we get more customers? Yes

Can we do repeat business with the same customers? Yes

Can we sell higher-ticket items for greater revenue? Yes

Coaching and Consulting

Coaching and consulting is the providing of services, to assist others in their online business. Perhaps you will want to start a marketing agency. Perhaps you will want to coach or teach others.

Can we get more customers? Yes

Can we do repeat business with the same customers? Yes

Can we sell higher-ticket items for greater revenue? Yes

As you can see, some businesses scale, others don’t. Before investing your time and hard earned money in a business, you may want to take these factors into consideration. Otherwise, you may not be able to scale it and may have to sink more of your time and money into it, to increase revenue. Fortunately, the business models above are tried and true and each one scales and works well with the others.
